Are you ready for a breath of fresh air? Of wonder? Of hope? A full serving of all that’s possible? Well, today I’m here to deliver! And it all starts with these questions: How can you see the invisible, the unseeable? How do you stare the very edge of human knowledge right in the face? Those questions are at the heart of an enormous scientific quest to take the first picture EVER of a black hole and that’s the super exciting topic of my next book: Black Hole Chasers: The Amazing True Story of an Astronomical Breakthrough.
But Friends, this story is actually about a group of people from around the world and all walks of life coming together, working together to pull off the impossible. And they did this against the backdrop of one awful global crisis after another. They had plenty of opportunity to bicker, backstab, undercut, and ruin the effort. But instead, they kept their eyes on the prize, pulling off a feat that had no human being ever had…taking a picture of a black hole and showing it to the world. This is a true story about following your dreams, trying, failing, picking yourself up, and trying again…not giving up, no matter what.
And readers, I have to tell you I was so lucky to be able to interview many of these scientists, ask them who they were as kids, dig into the really difficult parts of their years’ long efforts, and we spent a lot of time on what it was like… when after all that effort and hard work and problem solving… what was it like to be the first humans to see a black hole.
This book is your ticket to a front row seat…and for young readers, this is a view of their own potential future, their own STEM path, clues about solving really hard problems, and what to do when Internet trolls are targeting you. This story will inspire you both by introducing you to a fascinating corner of our cosmos but also by connecting you to the wonder of what’s possible.
